Seorang profesor berdiri sebelum memulai kelas filosofinya dan membawa beberapa benda di depannya. Saat kelas dimulai, tanpa berkata-kata, ia mengambil sebuah toples besar yang kosong, dan mengisinya dengan bola golf hingga penuh. Lalu profesor itu bertanya kepada mahasiswanya, apakah toples tersebut sudah penuh? Lalu mereka menjawab sudah. Setelah itu, profesor mengambil sebuah kotak yang isinya kerikil-kerikil kecil, dan menuangkannya kedalam toples tersebut, sambil menggerakkan toplesnya. Kerikil-kerikil tersebut masuk ke dalam area yang terbuka di dalam toples antar bola-bola golf. Lalu beliau bertanya ke mahasiswanya lagi,  apakah toples tersebut sudah penuh? Sekali lagi, mereka menjawab sudah penuh. Selanjutnya, si profesor mengambil sebuah kotak yang berisi pasir dan menuangkannya ke dalam toples itu. Tentu saja, pasir itu mengisi ruang-ruang kosong yang ada. Lalu ia bertanya, apakah toples tersebut sudah penuh? Mereka menjawab iya...
